School of vocational teacher education - study guide Oulu University of applied sciences 2013-2014
Pedagogical competence
I haven't studied education before I started this IVET programme, and thus I am a novice in many areas. However, I have a lot of experience of being a student (at two universities, commercial college, and upper secondary school) and I have had a chance to monitor the working of countless teachers. Based on that, I think I have some knowledge of teacher's work.
My natural communication skills will support communication with students, and I have also studied communication as my major at university. I have got a lot of experience of using ICT technology at my work and studies, for example, I have been an AC host of my workplace.
Teacher’s competence in values integration
I work for an organization that operates in the field of education, and values integration is a significant part of the work at my workplace. Therefore I think I know something about teacher's professional ethics. For example, a teacher should support students' learning and growth, students have to be treated with respect and equity, and assessment has to be fair and clear.
Competences in the world of work
I have several years of work experience in secretarial work, communication, other office work, and sales. I have strong professionalism in secretarial work as well as some areas of communication and customer service.
Working community competence
I have several years of work experience from many kinds of workplaces. Therefore I have a lot of experience in cooperation and interaction in various working life environments. I have got experience of guiding interns at my workplace. However, I don't know all the laws that govern an educational establishment.
Global competence
I have experience of studying at international study programmes and working with people, who are from different countries and cultural backgrounds. For example, I studied on the Erasmus exchange programme in the Netherlands in the spring term 2013. Previously, I have participated in some courses of intercultural studies. However, I don't have much knowledge of international educational policies.
Competence in research, development and innovation
I have graduated from a science university and also from the university of applied sciences. Therefore I have experience of research as a student. I have also worked as a research secretary, and thus assisted research. This all means that I am familiar with the theories and practices of research and my own fields. I have also implemented several development projects at work life, for example developed websites.
How do I want to develop as a vocational teacher? What motivates me?
I'm developing my skills by studying English philology and also Finnish philology to have more subjects that I could teach. I find this IVET programme very motivating since I have already learnt a lot and in general, I like studying in English. I find it motivating when I have a chance to improve my skills towards excellence. Good job opportunities are also motivating.

2. FAMILIRIAZING MYSELF WITH THE STUDIES AND PLANNING AHEAD
What studies support and nurture the development of your core competences? How do you schedule your studies?
This year I will take VOC1, VOC2, educational sciences, and start teacher practise by observing. Other courses I'll take this year are the optional courses Global Education in Vocational Teacher Education and Tools for Teaching in English, and also a course of intercultural communication.
I will finish the teacher practise next year. Then I will have 4 credits of optional studies left, and I don't know yet what I will study, but I'm sure I will find something interesting.
Consider the possibilities teaching practise in your own field of work. In which vocational institute or polytechnic or other institute can I carry out my teacher practise? What core contents shall I concentrate on? Which target audience shall be my students? Or shall I go abroad for Teaching Practise?
I'm interested in teaching Finnish to immigrants, and I would like to go to this kind of classes. A local vocational school might also have some English programmes, and I will see if they have some subjects that I could teach, for example business administration. I know they have a lot of immigrants as students.
Besides the vocational school, I would like to do observation at university at Suomi 1 and 2 classes and at local folk high school, which has programmes for immigrants. One option is also to go abroad to teach Finnish. In that case I would do the observation part in Finland and the teaching part abroad sometimes later. In all cases my students would be adult immigrants or foreigners.
What former competences or learning shall I present to be accredited?
I'm not going to present any former learning to be accredited.

3 MY FUTURE AS A VOCATIONAL TEACHER
Use at least three sentences to describe how you see yourself as a vocational teacher in the future.
I'm really interested in teaching, and so I'm interested in improving my skills continuously. I will support immigrants and foreign students in their adaptation to the Finnish society. I will be creative and enthusiastic in trying different teaching methods.
